...parish priests take in a broken-down movie actress and-bingo!-pretty soon she stars at a benefit for them. Next week in Manhattan, blonde dynamo Betty Hutton, 53, who hurtled through some 20 musicals in the '40s and '50s, will be the big-name attraction at a $50 and $100 a plate dinner to raise money for St. Anthony's Church in Portsmouth, R.I. Coggan began his career in a working-class parish, and as a bishop has kept contact with ordinary folk by visiting breweries, mines and shipyards. At the graveside, the grieving five-year-old lad felt drawn to the towering Mount Adams-"a friend, a force for me to tie to, a symbol of stability and strength." Afflicted with puny legs as a result of polio, he resolutely hiked and climbed until...
ILLICH HAS a fascinating background. Austrian by birth, he studied history, philosophy and theology in Rome, Salzburg and Vienna. He served as an assistant pastor in a Puerto Rican parish in New York City for five years and then as a monsignor and vice-rector of the Catholic University of Puerto Rico for another four years. He was dismissed from the latter post in 1960 after a controversy arose over his role in the island's birth control program. He then helped found the Intercultural Documentation Center in Cuernavace, Mexico, where he wrote Celebration of Awareness, Deschooling Society and Tools...
