After yesterday’s Candlemass celebration, which was held in the upper church at St. Paul’s Parish, the Harvard-Radcliffe Catholic Student Association (CSA) named its new leadership for 2006. Michael V. Brewer ’07 will take on the leadership role of CSA president for the upcoming year. All Harvard undergrads who attended student mass on Sunday, Dec. 11 were eligible to vote in the elections. Between 200 and 300 students cast votes on the 14-person ballot, estimated outgoing CSA President Anna Lonyai ’06. In an e-mail, Brewer wrote...
...bungalow style. "An ideal cottage for a summer home," proclaimed the catalog copy. Since then generations of architects have taken a crack at improving on the kit concept. Among the most recent are Douglas Gauthier and Jeremy Edmiston of SYSTEMarchitects in New York City. Their take is called the Parish House, and a century after Sears, they used computer design and manufacturing. The result: a three-bedroom, two-bath, 1,000-sq.-ft. bungalow that costs $184,000 and whose structural system consists of 1,100 pieces of laser-cut plywood. Each piece is different. ...Parish House has a complex geometry that defies traditional housing-construction methods. Its design was made possible through computer modeling. The pair sliced up the house onscreen to shape each structural piece for its role, then extracted those pieces from the model and numbered them. With another program, the pieces are arranged on plywood sheets to maximize use of the wood. "We save a lot of waste that way," says Gauthier. And a lot of time. The boards can be cut locally and shipped to the site on two flatbed trucks. No railcars needed...
Beyond an island of light downtown, most of Orleans Parish is still in the dark. Of the city's eight hospitals pre-Katrina, only two are open to serve a population that swells to 150,000 during the day. The public school system--destroyed by back-to-back hurricanes--is in limbo while the state considers a takeover and charter-school advocates vie for abandoned facilities. One lone public school for 500 students is set to open this week...
...supply and medical records are missing or destroyed. The Navy hospital ship is gone, replaced by a makeshift treatment center that moved out of tents and into the New Orleans Convention Center last week. Level One trauma care, for the most seriously wounded, is available only in the next parish. "If you're in a major car accident, have been stabbed or shot or hit over the head with a pipe, the soonest you could go into the operating room now is about an hour--and that's if you 'schedule' your trauma between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.," says...
