...expert Oscar Chiang reports that the threat of violence on the night of the Hong Kong handover must be taken very seriously as the turf battles between free-speech and pro-China advocates intensify. A leading Hong Kong Democrat warned Wednesday that a planned free-speech protest in Victoria Park on the night of the handover could turn violent if China resorts to such ''dirty tricks'' as instead granting the permit for the space to the suddenly-interested pro-China Hong Kong Federation of Women. Hong Kong Democrats, says Chiang, see that they are about to be unceremoniously eliminated from...
...what happened to those lazy, listless baby busters who supposedly typified the new generation? Beavis and Butt-head were their icons; Beck's Loser was their song ("Savin' all your food stamps and burnin' down the trailer park"); Richard Linklater's Slacker, with its Austin, Texas, deadbeats, was their movie. This was the MTV generation: Net surfing, nihilistic nipple piercers whining about McJobs; latchkey legacies, fearful of commitment. Passive and powerless, they were content, it seemed, to party on in a Wayne's Netherworld, one with more antiheroes--Kurt Cobain, Dennis Rodman, the Menendez brothers--than role models. The label...

Complains LuAnn Perez, whose store on Route 50 in Cameron Park, Calif., is flanked by others: "Business was great until four other McDonald's were built between Sacramento and us." She and her husband are suing the company over the sale of their business...
...June 7 at New York's Belmont Park, all eyes--as well as many bets and hopes--will be on Silver Charm, a 3-year-old gunmetal gray colt by Silver Buck out of Bonnie's Poker; and his trainer, Bob Baffert, a 44-year-old silver-haired charmer by an Arizona cattle rancher out of a schoolteacher. Together, along with jockey Gary Stevens and owners Bob and Beverly Lewis, they have won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, the first two jewels of the Triple Crown. This Saturday they will try to win the third, the Belmont...
Other songs on the album work better. Doll has a fleeting, folksy loveliness, Monkey Wrench throws effective pop punches, and Hey, Johnny Park! has an ingratiating melody. But none has much ambition beyond making a blunt impact. If you're going to spell "colour" with a u in your album title, shouldn't you at least try for pretentiousness...
