...wonders of incumbency, the best political steroid ever. Howard rules (much better than) O.K.! Among many good ones, the P.M. is the Liberal party's best strategist. More important, he is the government's most effective communicator in today's supercharged news cycle. Usually with minimal success, Parliament House's hired political hands try to craft lines that will reach ordinary people about the government's actions and inactions; Howard has the advantage of an open invitation to appear on radio or TV. It's hardly oratory or storytelling; nevertheless Howard's words, gestures and images stick. Why? Few editors...
...more than once has pushed it to the edge of the precipice. But these days al-Sadr is part of the process: in December's general elections, his candidates won 32 seats, giving him a decisive voting bloc in the 128-member Shi'ite alliance that dominates the new parliament. If Israel wants peace, it and the world at large should accept the election results. Hamas won on not only its political agenda but also its social and welfare programs. It is counterproductive and unrealistic for the U.S. not to continue financial assistance to the Palestinians. Hamas members like Omar Hamayel...
...investigating; the company was, Githongo says, nothing more than the fictitious creation of a few senior Kenyan government officials and their associates. The money, alleges Githongo, was actually intended to build an election "war chest" for the ruling coalition. Two Ministers named in the graft report have quit, and parliament has questioned Kenya's Vice President over what he knew. All three men proclaim their innocence, and no high-level official has been convicted. But the tremors continue. "We are seeing political accountability on corruption for the first time in Kenyan history," says Githongo, 40. "It's a painful process...
