Despite the quick notoriety that it has gained, Taiwan flu is not considered unusually dangerous. As a close cousin of long-dormant strains, however, it poses a particular threat to people under 35 with chronic health problems; they are not old enough to have developed a strong immunity from previous exposures...

...education curriculum is described as "value neutral" but, like many other school systems' courses, is actually based on a generalized secular ethic of caring and respect for others. Parents dissatisfied with the version of the city curriculum served up in their district can pull their children out of particular classes by informing the principal. The program is sometimes popular, as it is at P.S. 42, but the effort to accommodate everyone is unacceptable to many. Last month the board of education mandated sex education for the remaining eleven school districts without it. Last week 250 protesters showed up at city...

These performances smack of professionalism. When Barrera's biting tongue exclaims, "I can't get on without making other people suffer," we believe her. Heck, we cringe at her every caustic outburst...

...like to be privy to everyone else's weird thoughts and ways of looking at things," says Cooperson, in explanation of his love of languages. A tangential interest is drawing--in particular creating cartoons--again reflecting his sense of the offbeat. Last year he helped put together a cartoon book, and he has done the graphics for several of the house T-shirts. Cooperson jokingly traces this interest in the unusual back to his hometown: Wilmington, Delaware. "It's so small and American. I needed the exotic...
