...truly beautiful ground, but still more remarkable is the way she deals with the relationship of the figure to that ground. In these paintings, the dancer is certainly the figure, yet her body is completely integrated with the ground. The effect is that the painting feels complete, that every part of the canvas is important, not just the figure. ...Indeed, the voice of lead singer (and guitarist) Dean Wareham, so soothing and haunting on recordings, was reduced to a nasally twang straining to hit the top notes. While this may have been part of the band's charm, I found it difficult to listen to and rather annoying. The sedentary nature of the crowd was also unnerving.
