...Brezhnev, who had worked with Khrushchev years ago when he was cleaning out opposition in the Ukraine. Four new faces were added: Otto Kuusinen, 76, a longtime Finnish Communist, Averky Aristov from Chelyabinsk in the Urals, Nikolai Belyaev from the Altai Krai in Siberia, and Nikolai Ignatov, a onetime partisan hero whom Khrushchev had planted in a key spot during the preparation of the Leningrad Case...
...Partisan. Last week, before an Army court-martial at Redstone Arsenal, with the house packed with newsmen, the curtain went up on The Case of Colonel Nickerson. It was soon obvious from the first act, and to no one's surprise, that the great drama had turned into something akin to a forum for Colonel Nickerson. First off, Nickerson pleaded guilty in effect to charges of laxity, whereupon the Army dropped the tough specifications about espionage and perjury (and thus reduced the sentence). At one moment he would have his audience roaring with him, as in Matilda ("Everyone sing the chorus...
...disappearance of their sons or husbands, all of whom had known Gorreri-and too much about the Gold of Dongo. Among them was the 63-year-old mother of Luigi Canali, alias "Neri," an idealistic Communist who was murdered a week or so after he signed the original partisan inventory of the treasure. "I remember," said she, "when my son told me, 'Mama, those thieves are ruining everything. I have seen such things!' ' When her son disappeared, Mama Canali looked up his old associate Dante Gorreri seeking information, but all she got was an embrace...
