...Clinton a victim of malicious liars, sick partisanship, a savage press corps, an independent counsel gone hay-wire? Or are we the victims, those of us who voted for him and believed he was a good enough, if not perfect, man, prone to temptation but strong enough to lead without disgracing himself or the nation? Our questions may never be fully answered. But if we, as individuals and as a citizenry, lose our reason and dignity in the rush to crush this man, all of us will need to ask for forgiveness...
...then, as now, Reagan Republicanism was different. It was a time when America believed it was above partisanship, when there were more urgent (and less difficult) preoccupations than campaign finance reform, when people did not hate each other for who they were or from where they came...
Hyman's attack on Jay is unfortunate because it undermines the credibility of the committee by injecting a note of partisanship where none exists. All three candidates for chair said that they saw no reason for politics to enter into the work of the committee; Hyman is doing a grave disservice to the committee by trying to make it appear partisan. Experts answer the questions of efficiency and practicality, and their is little...
...ethics committee adopted by the House today specifically cited Gingrich's failure to get proper legal advice before using tax-exempt funds for political purposes, and for providing inaccurate information in response to a direct request from the committee. The two-year investigation was marked by fierce partisanship in the House as a whole, as well as a quiet bipartisan effort in the subcommittee as it evaluated thousands of pages of testimony and evidence. The question of Gingrich's guilt was settled last December 21, when he admitted to a statement of alleged violations. The House process since then...
