Many of the lyrics on Here Lies Love, in fact, are adapted directly from the principal characters' own words. (The quotations from Imelda tend to be enormously self-aggrandizing, of course, but that's part of the fun.) The story arc follows Imelda from her troubled childhood through her whirlwind courtship with Ferdinand Marcos, her gradual assumption of political power and her break with Cumpas. By the last few songs, however, everything falls apart: following years of martial law and the assassination of Marcos' rival, Benigno Ninoy Aquino (who had briefly dated Imelda in their youth), the Philippines...
...earlier version of the April 10 post "Admissions: One in Sixty" stated that one in 60 of "high school seniors" applied to Harvard this year. Kaczynski, who became Poland's president in 2005, had been a dogged critic of Putin and Russia's efforts to restore influence over the former Soviet Union. He sparred with the Kremlin over the bans Russia imposed on Polish food imports in recent years, calling them part of a strategy of political blackmail and manipulation. In 2006, he even proposed that the European Union impose sanctions on Russia for its economic bullying in Eastern Europe. His animosity had deep roots. In 1980, he spent nearly a year in prison for "anti-socialist" activities when the Moscow-backed communist government imposed...
...Whether or not Moscow played a part in encouraging the opposition, the turn of events marks a sudden reversal in relations between the two countries. Ties between the Kremlin and Bakiyev's government had deteriorated sharply in recent months, in part because of Bakiyev's powerful son Maxim, who had acted as a negotiator with the U.S. over the use of the Manas air base outside the capital, Bishkek, to ferry supplies to U.S. troops in Afghanistan. (Amid Wednesday's upheaval, the U.S. State Department said Maxim Bakiyev was on his way to the U.S. for consultations.) The opposition...
...investigation concerns bribes allegedly paid as part of the approval process of major construction projects that occurred first while Olmert was mayor of Jerusalem from 1993 until 2003, and afterward when he was Minister of Industry, Trade and Labor. He became Prime Minister in 2006. Chief among the controversial projects was the 1999 development of the luxury Holyland residential towers on a prominent Jerusalem hilltop, which had originally been zoned for a hotel. Prosecutors are now alleging that Messer and Jerusalem's city architect at the time facilitated the approval of the much larger - and, some critics would say, much...
