...finest, most glamorous actors on the globe. But their combined name value means little at the U.S. box office. "I've gotta believe, in the job that I do, that when you give the audience something that they haven't seen before, they are going to like it," Amy Pascal, Sony Pictures' movie chief, says of her studio's $80 million investment. "I'm hoping the film appeals to people who have ever been in love...
...arrogant and pushy, Mayor Bertrand Delanoe had opted for modesty, letting Paris's Olympic merits speak for themselves. The failure of that approach in the face of full-court lobbying by the British left him bitter. "What made us lose was fair play," Delanoe said from Singapore. In Paris, Pascal Bildstein, vice president of the French Triathlon Federation, was more explicit: "When Princess Anne promises all the IOC members an audience with the Queen, it's just not ethical. This was a victory for Anglo-Saxon lobbying, and a loss for real Olympic values...
...Sarkozy, who as head of the governing Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) is already eyeing the 2007 presidential elections, is gunning for the hard-right voters of Jean-Marie Le Pen's National Front. If so, he'll have to contend with his own government first. Justice Minister Pascal Clément noted that "the law, all of the law, was respected" in the prisoner's early release, and Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin lectured that "nothing should put in question the independence of the judiciary." For his part, the judge in question accused Sarkozy of "demagoguery...

Recently Marcello Mastroianni has starred in two adaptations, of the novel The Late Mattia Pascal and the play Henry IV. Both movies offer aspects of the basic Pirandello theme, in which the universe is a carrousel whirling off its moral axis, and man's ego is a mask that conceals a gaping void. In their entrancing new film, Paolo and Vittorio Taviani have revived a less familiar Pirandello: the compulsive storyteller, spinning tales about his native Sicily, its stern landscape and elemental passions...
...major companies have discounted programs competing with Borland products. Last summer Lotus Development (1984 sales: $157 million) cut the price of its Spotlight program, which competes with Sidekick, from $150 to $75. Microsoft (fiscal 1985 sales: $140 million) is now offering customers a $40 rebate on its rival Pascal software. Still, Microsoft President Jon Shirley scoffs at the notion that his firm will have to match Borland's prices any time soon. Though software may be expensive, he argues, the quality of programs has steadily improved, adding more value for the money. Says he: "There's no tremendous pressure from...
