Lausanne conferences have waxed and waned and the threat of war has lowered black on the horizon more than once. The most recent cloud, which arose over the Turkish claim for reparations, has now been turned inside out by Venizeios and Ismet Pasha, and ministers at Lausanne believe that wisps of silver can be seen without great straining of the eyes. With both parties to the argument immovable in their convictions, the obstacle at first appeared difficult. Then the other members of the conference joined the argument. Greece acknowledged the validity of the claim, Turkey accepted the gift of Karaghatch...

The situation is extremely delicate and might lead to war between France and Turkey on the smallest inadvertent provocation by local troops. Neither Turkey...

...Caliph, successor to Mohammed and Haroun al Raschid, will no longer have any temporal power, such as his predecessors had. It was feared that the Moslems in India would object to this sudden move, but a congress of Moslem religious teachers in Calcutta has wired approval to Mustapha Kemal Pasha, calling him the " Renovator of the Caliphate," and accepting the new status of the Caliph. The present Caliph's " holy beard" has just reached the length required for sultans, and was blessed with appropriate ceremonies last week...
