...issue that the great man stormed from the room growling, "Nobody is going to tell me how to love God." In Ten Philosophical Mistakes Adler makes only an occasional swipe at Dewey and leaves God pretty much alone. But he takes on Locke, Hume, Rousseau, Hobbes, Marx and a passel of other post-16th century thinkers, whose common and "disastrous" mistake, says Adler, was to invent new kinds of wisdom without building on the ancient truths. "The modern philosophers start as if they had no predecessors," he scolds...

...gonna keep 'em down on the farm after they've seen the fall crop of farm movies? In one of those bewildering flurries of consensus that occasionally lead Hollywood toward artificial revivals of old genres (Remember the passel of westerns in 1980?), three major studios have produced a trio of films on the same unfashionable subject: Don't sell the farm, Mother! Disney's Country, like Tri-Star's Places in the Heart and Universal's forthcoming The River, tells the story of a strong-willed woman who fights the banks, the elements...

Lithgow...

Admittedly, to produce Shakespeare's Pericles. Prince of Tyre courts disaster. The play is rarely performed and for good reason. An inane plot juxtaposes strength, integrity and innocence--embodied in three main characters, Pericles. Thaisa and Marina--with a passel of debauched and wicked malefactors. Goodness prevails in a series of circumstances and coincidences which quickly becomes a caricature of itself," this day, the play remains of questionable authorship, though a number of well-turned and colorful phrases reveal the Elizabethan Bard. Indeed, language, infages, themes and parallels occasionally redeem the play, but mostly it just sloughs along. Uncut...

...Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, a frustrated newspaper writer, left the cold North and set up residence in the lush remoteness of central Florida. The therapy was successful. She found herself; she found a pleasant local fellow whom she later married; she discovered a passel of good friends in the cracker families living around the creek bend; and out of her experiences she wrote the novel that made her famous, The Yearling, and later her memoir, Cross Creek...
