Usage:

...process, but I'm not happy with the rumors and malicious charges that came out, with no evidence behind them. I would think a lot of people would pause before throwing out those charges they throw out in the form of questions. If you think it's fair to pass along or circulate rumors that prove to have no basis in fact, then I'm not sure that's sound, insightful journalism...

Never inclined to shun controversy, New York City Mayor Ed Koch last week offered solace and a solution to millions of pedestrians who cannot pass by a panhandler without feeling guilty. Koch's advice: donate to a charity instead. Most street beggars, in the mayor's view, are "mentally disturbed or it's a scam." Many "just don't want to work for a living" and spend the take from passersby on "booze and drugs." Murphy is most convincing when he tries to put the Fortas affair into a historical context, rather than a crassly political one. He notes that Fortas fell victim to what amounted to a swing of the pendulum in American politics, when the "whales" of the Senate saw their power pass away to a younger generation and when the liberalism of LBJ and JFK was replaced by a conservatism of which we may only now be seeing the last vestiges...
