...return to the circus takes Lola backstage to her dressing room, a cage behind which pass actors staging her childhood. The camera follows them back and forth, passing in the middle of each are the sick, static Lola, and provoking a second flashback. In it Lola, a child still mourning her father's death, accompanies her mother aboard ship only to discover her affair with an officer. The sweeping camera movements which follow this child through the ship and express her curiosity and longing, ironically stress the objects and walls that confine her movement through the cramped lower deck...

...that state legislators can't pass effective social legislation as quickly as they pass laws to curb college and university rebels. I suppose it's cheaper and simpler to hire extra police to enforce the new laws than it is to reform the colleges and universities and make them more acceptable to the students. Unfortunately, the moderate student seeking legitimate change will suffer, and those of the extreme right and the New Left will delight in the continuing erosion of genuine democracy in this nation...

Magaziner's principal recommendations are that collegians be allowed to choose courses in broad intellectual areas that interest them, rather than follow fixed requirements, and that conventional grades be abolished in favor of "pass" or "no credit." His report also urges professors to focus on concepts rather than narrow facts, and to work far more closely with individual students. These ideas are not especially original; Magaziner's achievement is the persuasive logic of his presentation...
