...scale. With a cool, methodical, formalist vision in the vein of compatriots and fellow imagemakers Andreas Gursky and Candida Höfer, he has, in his most widely recognized photographs, depicted what he calls the "architecture of density" in Hong Kong, the city he has called home for the past 14 years. Some of this work formed part of his excellent 2005 book Hong Kong: Front Door/Back Door, which focused on the surreal traces of city dwellers in eerily depopulated urban frames. It is a subject to which he now returns in the two-volume, slipcase-bound Hong Kong Inside...

Sectarian violence has made a worrying return to Northern Ireland in the past year, with the killings of two British soldiers and a policeman in attacks blamed on dissident republicans opposed to power-sharing. And on Jan. 8, another
policeman was wounded in a bombing. The Independent Monitoring Commission, a paramilitary-watchdog group, said in November that dissidents pose a greater security threat now than at any time in the past six years. Compare that with the estimated 99% of U.S. beef cattle that live out their last months on feedlots, where they are stuffed with corn and soybeans. In the past few decades, the growth of these concentrated animal-feeding operations has resulted in millions of acres of grassland being abandoned or converted - along with vast swaths of forest - into profitable cropland for livestock feed. "Much of the carbon footprint of beef comes from growing grain to feed the animals, which requires fossil-fuel-based fertilizers, pesticides, transportation," says Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma. A year ago, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm gave Bobb, the former president of Washington, D.C.'s Board of Education, the task of ending the financial crisis that has devastated the Detroit public-school system. In the past decade, the number of Detroit public-school students has plummeted from more than 167,000 to 84,600, mainly because of the emergence of charter schools and the middle class's exodus to the suburbs. It could fall further, to 65,000 in the next four years. Those trends...

...Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great, in which political leaders used symbols of Russian grandeur - including an entirely submissive church - to create greater support for the regime," says Jean Gueit, rector of the Nice cathedral. "Russian society has been so disoriented and adrift following the changes of the past 20 years that Putin is playing the old nationalist game to snap people out of it by responding to simplistic messages and emotions. Part of that is rebuilding the equally shattered Russian Orthodox Church and help it snatch up all these parishes abroad...
