...street near the American ambassador's residence, where Ronald Reagan will be staying, has been repaved. Buildings opposite the Kremlin have been repainted in pastel colors. Even the grassy boulevard in front of a home Nancy Reagan may visit has been replanted. Like a latter-day Potemkin village, Moscow last week was being spruced up for next week's summit meeting between Reagan and Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev. But the most noteworthy preparation for the superpower sit-down was in progress about 2,000 miles from the Kremlin on the dusty, sunbaked plateaus of northern Afghanistan. There a convoy...

Perhaps the most delectable oyster invention of all belongs to Karl Beckley, 34, who combines the mollusks with corn in airy pancakes topped with salmon caviar at his postmodern, pastel-spattered Green Lake Grill. Cream of nettle soup and roast rabbit with sweet peppers and glazed garlic cloves are some of Beckley's other triumphs...

The palette (peach, delft, ash) is sober and cool, Wiener Werkstatte monochrome given a pastel California ruddiness. Vanderbyl sheets would go nicely in a Christopher Alexander house. Alexander, a Berkeley architect and urban theorist, has lately turned his militantly humanist attentions to office furniture. No workstations or open plans for him. Instead, Alexander and his colleagues have designed mass-production desks and bookcases that are solid and reassuringly old-fashioned, classic...

...headed for Main Street Heritage USA--a row of pastel storefronts covered with Christmas bulbs and American flags. In the toy store I pressed the tummy of a $25 doll, and it praised Jesus. The plastic Armor of God, manufactured by Praise Unlimited of Sarasota, Florida, was available at a more moderate price. And I found a real bargain at the drug store sale--"Tammy Faye for President" buttons, for only 99 cents...
