...reality, however, Holy Cross (which broke ground for a building on Sept. 19) was born in pain and recrimination. Last January, Beach, then the beloved pastor at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in nearby Monroe, Ga., shocked the members of his congregation by telling them that after 12 years as their spiritual leader, he was leaving not only them but also their denomination, the Episcopal Church U.S.A. Weeping, he explained that the church's attitude toward gays, which he termed its "immoral crisis," had led him to "the conclusion that I can no longer serve the Lord as an Episcopal...
...Congregation for today's service of the journey, "a casual, contemporary, Christian church," fills the Promenade, a theater on upper Broadway in New York City. The Sunday-morning faithful--a few hundred strong--have come to hear the Journey's laid-back pastor, Nelson Searcy, give them the word. The word made film. Searcy, 32, who in jeans and a goatee looks like a way less Mephistophelian Charlie Sheen, is about to deliver the last of the church's eight-part God on Film series. The topic? "Catwoman: Discovering My True Identity...
What's the biblical import of, say, Spider-Man? "Peter Parker gives us all a chance to be heroic," says Erwin McManus, pastor of Mosaic, a Baptist-affiliated church in Los Angeles. "The problem is, we keep looking for radioactive spiders, but really it's God who changes us." "What is love?" If your minister floated those notions recently, it may be because movieministry.com provides homilies for Sunday sermons...
...Laverton, Marumba is prospecting for souls, not gold. Stretching his legs at Laverton's roadhouse after the 3.5-hour drive north, he spots some Aboriginal teenagers. "When you're in Kalgoorlie," he tells them, "come to church." But Marumba's most important work is being done out here. "Some pastors preach fire and brimstone," says Laverton's newly inducted pastor Rhys Winter, "but Pastor Peter is more a teacher than a preacher." In the process, Marumba says he wants to give birth to a new kind of Christian worker - "a person that can float above all the issues." Laverton...
...Together with Marumba and Pastor Rhys, last June the trio helped construct a temporary church shelter from scrap metal on the community common. "We put it up to show the people that there is a church here," says Smith. "Out here in the open, we can preach to anyone." Marumba won't be doing too much of that in the distant future; he'd like to take his wife and two young sons back to Kenya for a holiday. "I'm very tired," he admits. "Much too much." Already he can do some resting on his laurels. Out here...
