...nails-tough mistress with a heart of rhinestone. Mia Farrow is a coarse delight; this is her best work since Rosemary's Baby. Bright as the spangled jacket of a has-been crooner, funny as any Broadway comic could dream of being, appetizing as a pastrami-on-wry sandwich at the Carnegie Deli, Danny Rose is almost impossible not to like. Hey, pal, would...

...grease and soft drink crowd, three choices stand out. Elsie's is a Harvard institution, supplying delicious, cheap, hot pastrami sandwiches to legions of River House residents down through the years. (The Kennedys allegedly came here for snacks following touch football games in front of Winthrop House.) By the way, the chef's salad is an underrated gem. Tommy's just down Mt. Auburn St., is every bit the venerable institution, having served pinball-players and procrastinators for over 25 years now. The cheese steak sub is marvelous at 1 a.m. With these two stalwarts in tow, you'll find...

...This is without argument the home of the best fast food in the Square: thick, reasonably-priced sandwiches that make you wonder why you ever put up with Mom's lousy cooking. The Turkey Deluxe (T.D., for the football fans out there) is a classic, and the hot pastrami and cheese ranks up there with motherhood and the flag as something worth fighting for. The decor is, in a word, crummy (in two words, very crummy), but you can go somewhere else to digest, right? Two warnings: stay away from the place at lunchtime, when the Governor often...

Ignoring the issue of the general strength or weakness of the male characters, it is still difficult to understand why Swados has included many of the show's comic sketches. The Flying Pastrami Brothers are an amusing comment on the overly proud and pompous trapeze artists of the circus, but they add nothing significant to Swados' ideas about attitudes towards life. The routine between a ventriloquist and his dummy is not even funny, stoien as it is from a common vaudeville...
