...FARC's presence in Ecuador may be shadowy, but it's no secret. Ecuador spends more than $100 million each year to patrol the area. But for about 20 years FARC units like the 48th Front have regularly slipped across the porous border into Ecuador - there are only two points along the 250-mile (400 km) frontier where passports are even checked - under cover of the rainforest's lush vegetation to retreat, rest or replenish supplies. ...only up to a point. The effects triggered by chronically elevated levels of testosterone can eventually have the opposite effect. Animals observed in this same situation by scientists start to pick fights they ought to avoid, or to patrol a wider, more hazardous patch of territory. Perception of risk becomes blurred. Those new troops are to join France's current contingent of 1,600. But while those currently in Afghanistan patrol the relatively calm area in and around Kabul, most or all of the new units are expected to be sent to the south of Afghanistan, where the reformed Taliban and their allies have strengthened. Indeed, deaths among Canadian combat personnel in the area have been so high that Ottawa had threatened to pull its military from Afghanistan...

...governed largely by the same kind of computer programs pioneered by the New York Police Department during the 1990s. By cataloguing past events, police have a clearer idea of where and when future crimes might take place and can utilise their resources accordingly. "Police today don't go on patrol," says Ronaldo Marzagao, Sao Paulo's Secretary for Public Security. "They have a computer program that tells the squad cars where to go at what time, and what crimes take priority in each sector...
