...whine of a power saw biting into the big trees; the drone of an airplane far overhead, the growl of a lumber truck on a steep grade, the small talk of tiny birds in the bushes, and the murmuring of a mountain stream. And at night: the goose-pimpling patter of rain on the canvas that wakes a child, the stark clarity of detail in the tent when lightning flashes, and the crack of thunder and its rolling echo around the lake shore...
Short and thick-bodied, the boys bounce in front of the mike on the toes of their elevator shoes. They open with a half-sung patter about how hard they have worked on the act and how glad they are to be there. Then they charge down among the first few tables and shake hands. ...plate Lincoln Day dinner at the Waldorf, New York's Governor Nelson Rockefeller lived up to his reputation as the Republican Party's most dedicated back patter: enjoying himself hugely. Rocky slapped a slew of G.O.P. shoulder blades, even slung an affectionate arm around a handsome new bust of himself (by Italian Sculptor Gualberto Rocchi...
