Finally, Millar has misconstrued most of Snow's characters. Lewis Eliot, whom Millar has, for some reason, knighted, has become some sort of a passive Eric Portman figure, and no longer imposes any recognizable pattern on the various narrative fragments. Arthur Brown, to take only one other example, has suddenly sprouted a Falstaffian beard and manner: in the book, of course, he is the mildest and most sober of men. In fact, only G. H. Winslow, the College's delightfully tart ex-Bursar, and M. H. L. Gay, the Senior Fellow, retain any of their Snow-given characteristics; and their...

Once in a while you may see the Crimson use this pro-type pattern, with a half-back stationed inside a split, or wide, end. This is ordinarily a passing formation, as the wingback and the wide end can both break downfield and overload the secondary defenses. To make it work, though, you need a good line and a good blocking fullback to protect the passer. Grana is up to the fullback blocking; the question is whether or not the line is ready for such assignments. Yovicsin said the Crimson will probably run as well as pass off this formation...

Bassett will probably do his passing from a roll-out pattern (giving him a chance to run if this proves expedient), while Humenuk and Bartolet will tend to drop back and hurl longer missiles. As the season progresses, halfbacks Taylor and Harshbarger, and maybe even fullback Grana might be doing some passing. If such a situation materializes, and if the line can provide the necessary blocking and pass protection, the Harvard attack, potentially explosive on the ground or in the air, will be difficult to defense...

...exception to this pattern of long calm and fitful bloodshed was the war on the western frontier, which began in 1776. From then until more than a decade after Cornwallis' surrender, not a day passed when any settler in western New York, the valley of Virginia or the wilderness drained by the Ohio could count himself safe. His enemies were not merely the British, fighting at first to put down rebellion and later to hold the Great Lakes fur trade, but also the Indians, fighting for vengeance and survival...

Legislation & Law. The common pattern of parliamentary procedure follows the British model, even to the traditional mace, wigs and dispatch boxes of Westminster. The 51-year-old Commonwealth Parliamentary Association shuttles a constant stream of M.P.s through legislative halls around the world. Though all of its former colonies do not share Britain's respect for justice, the basis of the judiciary system is English common law everywhere except in Ceylon (where the precedent is Roman Dutch law). The most humble Nigerian native can, as a Commonwealth citizen, appeal to the mightiest judges in Britain through the Queen...
