...Patti Nielson, a teacher, had seen Harris and Klebold coming and ran a few steps ahead of them into the library. One kid was doing his math homework on a calculator; another was filling out a college application; another was reading an article in PEOPLE about Brooke Shields' breakup with Andre Agassi. "Get down!" Nielson screamed. She dialed 911 and dropped the phone when the two gunmen came in. And so the police have a tape of everything that happened next...

...just the odds. An extremely large family with money, resources, connections, time, opportunities--and a modicum of foolhardiness-- beyond what most can afford, including taking risks and indulging in pursuits others might not even consider, is likely to face such horrors. The only curse is Damn! What's next? PATTI GARRITY Manhattan Beach, Calif...

Before hitting the U.S., Springsteen kicked off the reunion with a triumphant sweep through 20 cities in Europe that began in April. Social science literature is filled with the gritty details--categorized under headings like "the spiral of rejection." Patti and Peter Adler, sociologists who do field research on cliques, found that a 17-year-old girl in one group they observed could raise her status by getting a boy to spend money on her and break up with another girl for her--and then dump him. Another clique member...

...greatest hits CD. Though other bands have throwaways as B-sides, any songs on this album could have been included on a regular U2 album (in fact, one, "Silver and Gold," was on Rattle and Hum). Worth the extra money alone are U2's haunting, dark version of Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot" and the U2 originals "Spanish Eyes" and "Luminous Times (Hold On To Love)." Other songs are brooding ("Love Comes Tumbling," "Endless Deep") or simply happy ("Hallelujah Here She Comes"). Only the covers are overly weak; their version of "Everlasting Love" seems a bit too close to Gloria...
