...June charity concert in Princess Diana's honor say they haven't been snubbed by top stars. But Elton John won't be there because he's on tour then, while guitar legend Eric Clapton, former Beatle Paul McCartney, pop singer George Michael and opera star Luciano Pavarotti have also pleaded prior engagements. Concert organizers have been criticized by the British press for setting ticket prices at $65. Those set to perform at Althorp Park, where Diana is buried, include singers Sir Cliff Richard and Chris de Burgh and the pop band...

...soul newcomer Erykah Badu and the late newsman Charles Kuralt were also multiple winners in the 40th annual awards show, held in Radio City Music Hall. Besides Barbra Streisand, two other planned performances were canceled due to illness -- George Strait was replaced by Vince Gill and Luciano Pavarotti's surprise fill-in was Aretha Franklin, who sang an aria. Following the split, Lewis became an occasional contributor of gossip to the Hollywood Reporter and in 1996 published The Private Lives of the Three Tenors, a quickie biography of Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti gushing with tales of the singers' amorous adventures. Her publisher, Steven Schragis of Birch Lane Press, says Lewis recommended that the book's publicity notes include this teaser: "How did the author, a glamorous Beverly Hills writer formerly with the Hollywood Reporter, get all the inside dope? She denies rumors she and Domingo were more than friends in the '80s, but read the book...

Pavarotti's big, clear tenor easily trumps Dion's showy yelp, and he doesn't stop there--he goes on to overwhelm the song's flitty lyrics and thrash its slight melody. Final score: Pavarotti: 3, Song: 0, Dion: 0. And while we're at it, give Dion a zero for this album...

...looks a bit like Mel Gibson. At No. 8 was Rieu's From Holland with Love. Poised just below the chart was his newest release, Strauss Gala. This impressive lineup has made Rieu, at least for the moment, one of the hottest acts in classical music--rivaling Luciano Pavarotti, Kathleen Battle, even David Helfgott, whose recording of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto returned to the top spot, ending the Dutchman's two-week stay in that position. Yet Rieu has never played a note in the U.S., and his albums have gone unreviewed by critics. He is the superstar nobody...
