...Coens create highly original takes on the macabre theme of human pavement art but cannot connect them into anything meaningful or entertaining. CEO Waring Hudsucker takes a running start from the end of the long boardroom table to dive through the glass en route to a majestic conclusion. The next executive to try the same meets with plexiglass. Even the closing scenes when Barnes faces death from the 44th floor has its great moments. These are innovative takes on the physical possibilities of office tower suicides, but the Coens set a tone early on they cannot keep...
...rule last week. Early Monday morning thousands of Zulus, carrying spears, axes, clubs, pistols and a few AK-47 rifles, surged into Johannesburg's main business district. At Shell House, the 21-story office building housing A.N.C. headquarters, security men fired a fusillade at the demonstrators, turning the pavement into a jumble of bleeding bodies and hawkers' overturned stands. People have always accused Pavement of being derivative, and it's true that they often should like other great bands. But that's rock'n roll, pal, take it or leave it! The final song on the album, "Fillmore Jive," is a decent successor to the Beatles' "I'm So Tired...
