...when Hayes' name was read out, you could practically hear the sound of mandibles detaching throughout the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, while back at Stax Records in Memphis there must have been astonished cheers. Hayes had become the first African American to win a music Oscar (or, indeed, an Oscar in any category except for acting). But that belated recognition was less a harbinger of enlightenment than a blip on the rainbow radar. No black musician would cop another Oscar until 1985, when Prince was honored for the score of Purple Rain...
...Vladikavkaz City Recruiting Center in the Russian territory of North Ossetia lies just outside the main town, through a tall, steel gate. Inside, along a small driveway overlapped by tall pines, lie a parking lot, pavilion and fruit orchard. A low, two-story concrete building with peeling paint serves as the recruiting center. The Crimson looked ready to shake things up in the Ancient Eight with a new coach and a talented team. Despite the early bright spot, things only went downhill, as Harvard stumbled to seven straight losses before commencing Ivy League competition, including close losses...
...Early in the season, Lin put up a career-high 23-point, nine rebound, nine assist performance in a big non-conference win over Mercer. Lin would later put his stamp on the season in one weekend, with the team hosting Princeton and Penn at Lavietes Pavilion on consecutive nights. Against the Tigers, Lin capped an 8-0 run by the Crimson with a layup on the right side with nine seconds to play to tie the game and force overtime. He finished with 20 points and seven boards in an eventual 76-67 Harvard victory. The next night...
