...first free computer game I fell for was solitaire. I remember that period only dimly. Young children (mine?) squalling in the backround, a wife (mine?) sobbing that this had gone on long enough, and me in my boxers, unshaven and attached like a human peripheral to the PC, playing hand after just-one-more-hand-please of that endless game. To this day, the computer-generated sound of a riffling card deck produces in me the kind of facial tics and palpitations that must be sadly familiar to cult deprogrammers, substance-abuse counselors and others in the desperate-cases business...
...retail celebrations. Federated Department Stores Inc., of Macy's and Bloomingdale's fame, said December sales would fall short of its original forecasts, and the forecasts weren't that high to start with. Specialty stores like Gap and Banana Republic are disappointed. And if you want to know what PC sales have been like, check the NASDAQ...

You can convert that old PC into a write-off rather than a doorstop--provided it's not too ancient. Groups like Share the Technology match PC donors with worthy charities. Or, for $29.99 IBM will take your PC and fix it up for a charity or recycle...
...economy is slowing down. Consumer confidence is fading fast, along with PC sales, auto sales, manufacturing output, factory orders, orders for durable goods, incomes, retail sales - and portfolios. Wealth effect? With a week of sessions left in the trading year, NASDAQ is down 35 percent for the year, the Dow maybe 7 percent. This, remember, was the year the bubble burst for a nation of insta-millionaire dreamers...
