...peculiar aspects of this war-dominated class was, of course, the war itself. One would have felt there would have been a sharp, even hostile line drawn between the returning veterans and the unsullied arriving from their preparatory and high schools but, if there was, I failed to notice much of it. What little there might have been disappeared quickly. Very few of the ex-G.I.'s wore any parts of their old uniforms or gave any overt signs of expecting or getting any preferential treatment or respect. One fellow went around with a chestful of fruit salad...

...CARPENTER CENTER is a bastard of a building, a concrete monolith flanked on all sides by the peculiar combination of colonialism and conservatism that makes up the Harvard red-brick style. The department it houses is another sort of aberration, grudgingly giving credit for work with paper, brushes, paint and wood instead of work with words...

...Simple (Stephen Cooke) is a funny, friendly man, but he lacks the brilliant wit of the Simple of Hughes's stories. He remains the thread that unites the disparate characters of the play, but pales beside the vitality of some of the other roles. Something of Simple's peculiar brand of militancy and tolerance, obstinate pride and humorous self-depreciation, is missing in this show. Cooke handles his part well, especially in the second act when more of the show centers on him, but Cross's script sacrifices some of the folk hero in her attempt to show the Harlem...
