This shallow breathing occurs during a doleful evening in which Clara and three other skinless neurotics are bullied in a desultory way by a thick-skinned fifth person, Clara's frightful mother Laura. The other characters are Clara's drunken stepfather; her uncle, an exhausted, ironical pederast; and a middleaged, neuter male publisher who is a family friend. There is too much drinking, too much smoking, too much acute description of mental states. The author, unwilling to waste a scrap of anguish, views the browned-out scene through the eyes of each gloomy participant in turn. Boredom, peevishness...

...English ruling class). Shenker's quest for exotic modes of conveying meaning has led him to Italy, where he compiles a graphic lexicon of the language of gesture ("Sicilians take the Fifth by raising their chins slowly... Fondle the back of your ear and somebody's a pederast.") Venturing even further afield, he travels to the Congo for a first-hand encounter with African drum language, only to have his experimental message. ...what uses does O'Brien put his historical carte blanche? He argues that Hammarskjold was a pederast and Lumumba an avid heterosexual. Disregarding the question of truth, which scarcely seems to concern O'Brien, is it not a sign of intellectual naivete to argue that the political acts of a pederast will automatically be evil and the political acts of a heterosexual will automatically be good? With similar unsophistication, he argues that only whites hurt blacks. Presumably, after almost 21 years of the Nigerian civil war, even his eyes should be a little wider open than that...

...Pederast Pedestal. Enlisting in the Army to forget his confused yearnings, Daniel falls into the clutches of the sort of officer who might have given the Marquis de Sade himself basic training. Under his cruel, relentless treatment Daniel suffers the nightmare extremes of the homosexual experience-castration and disembowelment-before dying. And Amos, who has become a male whore but who has still remained faithful to Daniel in his aberrational fashion, also comes to an early and bloody demise. Meanwhile, Eustace Chisholm, a self-styled poet, observes the whole story from an ascetic pederast pedestal and is somehow cleansed...

...foreign-service staffer, Mossman has written a satire on colonial debacle that is almost as savagely hilarious as Evelyn Waugh's Black Mischief. Mossman sets his scene in a mythical Middle Eastern kingdom on which the British are losing their traditional grip. The incumbent king is a corpulent pederast who splashes in a gold-plated bathtub while his people eat mice and provide entertainment for the sadistic secret police. His army and his oilfields are controlled by the British, but the British legate is a bumfembedded chargé, and his aides are tired old faggots and redbrick rejects...
