Lawson ran into trouble in San Diego, where, as an "avid pedestrian," he was stopped repeatedly for vagrancy on his midnight walks, prosecuted twice and convicted once under a provision of the state's penal code that required him to produce "credible and reliable" identification for any police officer who had reason to be suspicious.
