Hollywood was the scene of another rewriting of the Declaration of Independence. Film Director Herbert Biberman, shooting a picture at San Pedro Harbor, watched a boat loading scrap iron for Japan. It occurred to him that it takes something besides bandages for China to fight scrap iron for Japan, and that the peaceful artisans of Hollywood have most to lose from the world rise of militarism and dictatorship. He talked with Actors Melvyn Douglas and Edward G. Robinson. They all talked with Clark Eichelberger, a League of Nations advocate and chairman of the Committee for Concerted Peace Efforts. After...

Brazil's Sebastian Cardinal Leme da Silveira Cintra, who reminded his visitors of New York's late saintly Cardinal Hayes, greeted them as "spiritual ambassadors." Archbishop Pedro Pascual Farfan of Lima, Peru-an ancient Catholic city which produced the first American saint, St. Rose-addressed Bishop Ryan and Father Sheehy with florid Spanish courtesy, insisted that they sit upon thrones at a reception...

Dating from the first half of the thirteenth century, this grotesque griffin originally formed part of a row of ghastly figures that decorated the walls of the Sals Capitula, or chapter house, in the ancient monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza near Burgos in north-central Spain. Two British cruisers, in Chilean waters for a friendship visit, began transporting medical supplies, evacuating refugees and injured. Greatest need was for medical supplies to prevent the spread of tetanus, typhoid, check gangrene. From their Canal Zone base, two U. S. Army bombers roared south loaded with serums. From Chile's neighbor, Argentina, started a fleet of rescue planes...

...said the Congress, the whole thing was a mistake. Chile's party was as unlike Germany's as a sickle is unlike a swastika. The world must remember that 15,000 Nacistas helped elect Chile's Popular Front President Pedro Aguirre Cerda last October. Henceforth the party name was to be Popular Socialist Vanguard. It would advocate: 1) nationalization of copper, nitrate, iron industries, electricity, railroads (all but the last largely U. S.-owned); 2) creation of a State-owned bank and merchant marine; 3) housing for Chile's underpaid workers. Having thus clarified a world...
