...pageantry was, in a sense, just business as usual. But last week's peerless one-acter also marked a new spirit in the productions of the Windsors, the royal repertory company that takes the country as its national theater and itself as its subject. Horseplay was on show as much as horsemanship, and high spirits sometimes got the better of high style. Here was the first great spectacle graced with the trendified traditionalism of the second generation, the young royals. Even the Queen forsook her trademark bucket-size handbag for a small clutch that could have been borrowed from Daughter...
...Some days the balls are black. Not long ago, in a nearby office, a shimmying belly dancer tried to perk up a brooding scientist who was convinced that he had lost his zest for research. Since its founding on New Year's Day 1925, Bell Labs--AT&T's peerless research and development arm--has been bubbling with creative unorthodoxy. "To work here," says one researcher, "you have to let your hair down and be a free spirit...
Bolcom's concerto is indeed that. The composer is probably better known as the peerless accompanist for his wife Mezzo Joan Morris in their programs of American popular songs. But his spacious cantata on Blake poems, Songs of Innocence and of Experience, was in contention for 1985's Pulitzer Prize for Music and should have won. They were selected from a collection of 30,000 sacrificial objects that the Mayas threw into a 200-ft.-wide limestone sinkhole that was their sacred cenote, or well. The pieces -- jade pendants, gold jewelry, wooden idols and painted jars -- offer a peerless view of Central American aesthetic traditions over an 800- year period. Says the St. Paul museum's curator of archaeology, Orrin C. Shane III: "The objects from the cenote are the single most important archaeological treasure ever recovered in the Americas." Incredibly, nearly all the pieces were stored...
...safe to say, has it been cast as it has been in this version: Soprano Kiri Te Kanawa and Tenor Jose Carreras are Maria and Tony, the doomed lovers from rival gangs; Mezzo Tatiana Troyanos is Maria's friend Anita, who feels that life is all right in America; peerless Mezzo Marilyn Horne makes a cameo appearance singing the gentle ballad Somewhere; and, surprisingly, Bernstein conducts his full score for the first time. Far from being a vanity production with a group of slumming opera stars, however, the performance is convincing and vital...
