...Edward's new benefactor is Peg Boggs, sweet-souled and steel-willed, who somehow convinces her family to accept and house this odd fellow with digital utensils. Peg's neighbors, naturally skeptical of having a monster next door, soon realize that Edward's handicap is also an asset: his scissorhands can sculpt trees into topiary, reshape poodles into dog-show winners and fashion chic hairdos for the ladies. One woman in particular, the vampish Joyce, gets kinda kinky over this man in black with the super-long fingernails, and has a vigorous erotic go at Edward. But his devotion...
...Bourne reimagines the film's unnamed town as Hope Springs, and the local school as, of course, Hope Springs High. The show's designer, Lez Brotherston, has made Welch's gaudy pastels a bit subtler in shade, and simplified the neighborhood into two small houses (Peg's and Joyce's), with the castle above and behind. But the show seems even more populated than the movie. Five or six family clusters, of mom, dad and the kids, go out motoring in invisible cars. ...Apple's arrogance can inspire resentment, which is one reason for some of the glee over Jobs's stock options woes: taking pleasure in seeing a special person knocked down a peg is a great American pastime. (Jobs declines to talk about the options issue.) But there's no point in pretending that Jobs isn't special. A college dropout, whose biological parents gave him up for adoption, Jobs has presided over four major game-changing product launches: the Apple II, the Macintosh, the iPod, and the iPhone; five if you count the release of Pixar's Toy Story, which...
...worst transgressions. Like the Abu Ghraib photos, the horror depicted in this media will live on well past the fleeting moment in the collective conscious. The mainstream media needs fresh material daily, burdened by the expectation to cover current events. But with these new technologies, time peg is an anachronism, and news, especially bad news, is no longer in the headlines on Monday and forgotten by Friday...
