...some credibility two years ago, but not today," says Yellowstone Superintendent Jack Anderson. Take Yosemite, once the most troubled park of all. In 1970 the lovely, steep-walled valley was choked with auto exhaust and campfire smoke, and so overcrowded, says Ranger Bill Whalen, that "camping was tent-peg to tent-peg." Long-haired kids noisily sought kicks from nature-with a little help from drugs. On July 4, 1970, pot-smoking youths clashed with armed police in the first riot ever in a national park. In Washington, the National Park Service reacted by dispatching a new breed of rangers...

...chess ranks somewhere between mumblety-peg and logrolling in fan interest. Or at least it did until Fischer, the celebrated recluse, became a media happening. The scenes blur: Bobby swinging away in a sports-celebrity tennis tournament, Bobby receiving a letter of support from President Nixon, Bobby jetting to Bermuda for lunch with David Frost and the beautiful people, Bobby making the rounds of the talk shows (Dick Cavett: Do you honestly think that you are probably the world's greatest player? Cyrus the Great provided a handy peg. Iran ("home of the Aryans") was settled by an Aryan tribe from what is now southern Russia. Cyrus, a leader of the Achaemenian dynasty of the tribe, accepted Babylon's surrender in 539 B.C., and by the next year had founded an empire that at its height stretched from present-day India to the Aegean...
