...other works in the show are not clearly grouped in styles, but share common elements with pieces in all three rooms. In much of the work, abstraction combines with realism to produce ambiguous and often disturbing images. "The Fabulous Beast," a pencil sketch by Max Ernst, shows a half-organic, half-machine animal. A faint tracing of a sun in the background implies that this creepy creature inhabits Ernst's (and our) world...

What dismays pen and pencil makers today is that woeful writing seems to be spreading. Particularly upsetting is the poor example being set by the White House. Among recent Presidents, Richard Nixon's script was barely legible, while John Kennedy's was so erratic that he seldom signed his own name the same way twice. Though Jimmy Carter's hand is clear, it seems almost juvenile when compared with the elegant, flowing scripts of early Chief Executives like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson...

Playwright Lapine writes amusing lines. At one point the mother asks the younger son why he doesn't get a job. An immigrant matriarch, her next question is pencil-point sharp: "Why did you go to college?" His riposte: "To avoid being asked questions like this after high school." One of the distinctly appealing aspects of Table Settings is its benign ami ability. ...book, Burger receives the harshest verdict. He is limned as a vain and petty man who consistently tries to bend or ignore the court's rules in order to get his way. His frequent vote switching exasperates his colleagues: after one flipflop, Justice Byron White threw his pencil on the conference table and shouted, "Jesus Christ, here we go again!" The chief is portrayed as a legal lightweight whose opinions are shoddy and poorly thought out. Of one Burger opinion dealing with court-ordered school busing in Detroit, Justice Lewis Powell is quoted as saying, "If an associate...

...unintelligible. The hospital decided to video-tape therapy sessions so linguists and speech pathologists could first slow it down, then analyze at leisure the relationship between obvious garbles like "pintu" (pencil), "nieps" (knife) and "ho-ahks" (orange) and real-life objects they apparently represented. Meier and Newport began laborious phonetic transcriptions to break the twins' dialogue down to traceable parts...
