That hope died last week, possibly for a very long time. Tanks and uniformed teens with guns were once more out on the streets of Phnom Penh, the capital, and the government was back in the business of executing its enemies. Tourists and foreign businessmen fled any way they could. After four years of faltering promise, Cambodia took a large backward step, and Phnom Penh had a whiff of Saigon in 1975, as timorous Cambodians approached foreigners with the plea: "Can you help...
...Khmer Rouge forces started trickling into Phnom Penh, Hun Sen, who had defected from the Maoist group in the late 1970s, became worried, and skirmishes broke out between the rival armies. "I did not want to leave," Prince Ranariddh later told a French reporter, "but my generals came to me and said, 'Hun Sen is going to attack, sire.'" The prince fled to Paris two weeks ago, and Hun Sen's troops fanned out through Phnom Penh. By early last week, they had control of the city. Two of Ranariddh's top aides were arrested and executed; others have gone...
...PNOMH PENH: As gunfire echoed through the streets of the capital, Cambodia began to descend once more into the isolated international pariah state it had been under the Khmer Rouge. Three days after Second Prime Minister Hun Sen took over in a bloody coup, troops went door-to-door through Phnom Penh's largest hotel today, hunting down opposition legislators and arresting them. At least one of Hun Sen's vocal critics was shot and killed while in police custody. "He was arrested by the government troops and he has died," said General Khieu Sopheak. The blithe efficiency...
...PNOMH PENH, Cambodia: Yeah, right. A clandestine Khmer Rouge radio broadcast claimed today that Pol Pot was captured Thursday night by a group of former comrades now loyal to Cambodia's royalist premier. Nobody's actually seem Pol Pot in captivity, of course, except the various groups that have claimed to hold him. Having just admitted they were wrong when they claimed to have captured him, Royalist government officials now are reluctant to say what they know. Meanwhile, Second Prime Minister Hun Sen, the leader of the formerly communist Cambodian People's Party, coolly dismissed the news as another flimsy...
...PNOMH PENH, Cambodia: One day after Pol Pot was reported captured by a Khmer Rouge faction, a shamefaced First Prime Minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh conceded that the notorious Khmer Rouge leader remains at large. That places the temporary advantage in Cambodia's explosive political tug-of-war in the hands of the formerly communist Cambodian People's Party, led by Second Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has long insisted that Pol Pot is dead. As TIME's Dean Fischer reports: "These two rival factions are trying to maneuver against each other, and one may be manipulating the facts...
