After reading the most recent edition of that most vile publication known as Peninsula, I find myself, as an editor of The Crimson, proud to be included on that rag's "Official Enemies List." A handful of reactionaries--who use a post office box as a mailing address--have managed to single out some of the most intelligent and thoughtful persons and organizations on campus as enemies of Harvard. Why anyone other than the author would be proud of his or her association with the September cover story ("Know Your Enemy") is beyond me, yet it must be read...

...characterization of any groups on campus as "enemies" rather than opponents establishes a Gestapo-esque dichotomy between the base and the virtuous. (It's too bad that members of Peninsula's Council don't realize they're on the wrong side.) Bob Dole and Jack Kemp have taken to calling President Clinton and Vice President Al Gore '69 their "opponents." Peninsula, on the other hand, explains that its agenda is "in keeping with the time-honored practice of making a list and checking it twice in order to ensure when the coup comes around the firing squad knows...

Perks for the press appeared even before the convention began, in a blow-out party Saturday night for 5,000 on a peninsula jutting into San Diego Bay. This gala lasted from 6 until well after 11 p.m. The food never ran out, and the drinks flowed freely...

BEIJING: China's President Jiang Zemin says China will accept the invitation extended by the United States and South Korea to mediate four-party talks aimed at reaching a permanent peace on the Korean peninsula. A South Korean newspaper today quotes Jiang as saying, "We hope to play a constructive role for peace on the Korean peninsula." The two Koreas ended their 1950s hostilities with an armistice, and are technically still at war. Until now, there had been no official word on China's reaction to the April proposal by President Clinton and President Kim Young-sam of South Korea...

...least. But whatever the reason, Olmec society was in full flower by 1200 B.C., at a place known as San Lorenzo, on a fertile plain overlooking the Chiquito River. Like all the known Olmec sites, San Lorenzo is much less impressive than the Mayan cities that dot the Yucatan peninsula to the east. One reason: it supported only a few thousand people, rather than 100,000 or more. The major buildings and plazas were little more than earthen mounds covered with grass, lacking any sort of masonry facade and probably topped with pole-and-thatch houses...
