BEIJING: China's President Jiang Zemin says China will accept the invitation extended by the United States and South Korea to mediate four-party talks aimed at reaching a permanent peace on the Korean peninsula. A South Korean newspaper today quotes Jiang as saying, "We hope to play a constructive role for peace on the Korean peninsula." The two Koreas ended their 1950s hostilities with an armistice, and are technically still at war. Like all the known Olmec sites, San Lorenzo is much less impressive than the Mayan cities that dot the Yucatan peninsula to the east. Driving last week by downtown's Symphony Hall, built in the past decade to much fanfare, I was struck by its desertion. No signs up for upcoming performers; no banners announcing that the Symphony Pops would once again be held on a peninsula jutting into the bay. The symphony's finances were badly mismanaged; that is something everyone here seems to agree...
