...winds. At the beginning of each act, characters come out and sing clever rock parodies, using Moliere's lyrics and music by Michael Gury, Ed Zwick, and Mark Hunter. Argan adds up his medical bills on an old-fashioned adding machine (meanwhile writing down the totals with a quill pen). Toinette makes her first appearance on roller skates, and after a while takes them off and goes through the rest of the play in shoes. The daughter's lover, Cleante, comes to the house carrying the sheet music for Love Story--and so on, providing an occasional laugh, but destroying...

Gilbert and Sullivan worked at cross purposes in the composition of Yeomen, and it shows in the finished work. Sullivan had decided, when he began to write, to sing a slightly greater theme, but Gilbert turned his pen, as usual, to satire, and humor. The result is a hodge-podge of conflicting plot lines, badly integrated score, and general confusion. When the Yeomen barcs its steel, we uncomfortable feel, and nothing short of a major revision would make us any more at home with the piece...

...been to college too. His Harvard (undergraduate and medical) training has stood him in good stead, but ultimately the novel is little more than a thriller. Crichton is an old hand at those. Not yet 30, he's already had several fair-to-middling successes under a variety of pen names as well as his 1969 best-seller The Andromeda Strain. The Terminal Man shows the benefits of past experience: Only an old hand could think of a sign saying "DO NOT FEED OR MOLEST THE COMPUTER...

Still more valuable to parents, however, is the staple information on how to find baby food, baby sitters, juvenile friends and pen pals, or how to turn out pediatricians at unlikely hours of the night: "If your three-year-old munches Daddy's deodorant stick, the Anti-Poison Center of Brussels will find the antidote and give you advice before the doctor comes." There are practical warnings against Spain's paper diapers (they disintegrate) and Scotland's tasteless attempts at American food. There is even advice on the inevitable problem of finding a bathroom for a child...

...watercolor has two roots. One is in pen-and-wash drawing, the other in the more static and ceremonious art of miniature painting. The first item in the Morgan catalogue is a painting of an imaginary noble savage, A Young Daughter of the Picts, by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues. Le Moyne, a French artist who worked in England in the 16th century, voyaged to Florida in the early 1560s. There he saw Indians-and concluded that there had to be a likeness between them and the lost tribes of primitive Britain. Hence the delicate Amazon, who might have stepped...
