It is written - the petition, not Miss Verdantique - on the daintiest kind of note paper with the coat-of-arms of the Green family impressed at the top. For Green pere, you must know, once kept a grocery, "but arter the war he had went on the street" where he was known among his set as "old Green," and so when the Heraldic Bureau were asked to "find" his family escutcheon they suggested that he take the name of Verdantique.
