...confused paean to liberty, born of sublimated political frustrations that millions of Chinese can relate to. "In 20 years, I think it is inevitable that China will evolve into a freer society," says Jiang. But curiously there is no such optimism in the book. The wolves - those symbols of perfect freedom - are exterminated by officials as part of a plan to turn the grasslands over to large-scale farming, and Chen Zhen, the protagonist, can find only hackneyed, metaphysical solace as he meditates upon a wolf-cub pelt, imagining the cub's spirit in "the place where all the souls...

Serious tea drinkers have always known that the perfect cup comes from loose leaves. Traditional tea bags may offer tidiness and convenience, but the taste is often lacking. The thickness of the bag means the tea inside must be ground until it is little more than dust, and when wet, the bag collapses onto itself, preventing the water from circulating through the leaves enough for a proper brew. But a closer look shows a copy of his best seller, The Audacity of Hope, at his heels. Why the need to have a book he wrote so close by? Is Obama really briefing himself with his own words? He had better broaden his horizons...

...they now stand, the results in those states were far from a perfect representation of popular will-a point the Obama campaign has made repeatedly. Both states, looking for more influence in the nominating process, held their votes before the Feb. 5 date allowed under party rules, despite a declaration by the Democratic National Committee that it would take away their convention delegates if they did so. (The Republican Party also penalized Florida and Michigan, but took away only half their delegates.) As a result of the DNC's warning, many Democrats chose not to vote-or to cast their...
