...perfervid expectations drove Ruth to murder, Marilyn to fatal overdose. Metaphorically, both women "die of intimate exposure," to quote a character in Insignificance known only as the Actress (Theresa Russell) but plainly meant to represent Monroe. The other three main characters find real-life correlatives just as easily. Indeed, the plot could be synopsized as follows: What if Albert Einstein (Michael Emil) were threatened in his hotel room by Senator Joe McCarthy (Tony Curtis), then visited by Marilyn Monroe, who explains the theory of relativity to its creator, then interrupted by Joe DiMaggio (Gary Busey), who wants a divorce...
...HEADQUARTERS! revolutionaries attuned to Mao took over the party and ousted Liu and Deng. Mao's wife, the ferociously radical Jiang Qing, had been biding her time to get at Deng. He had scorned some of her extreme efforts to "reform" Chinese culture, such as turning traditional opera into perfervid propaganda spectacles. "I support wholeheartedly that Beijing opera should be reformed," he said. "But I just do not feel like watching these plays." The croissant lover who had once commented that no one could be truly civilized without having dined out was despised by radicals. His feline remark became evidence...
None of these perfervid cultural make-overs, however, has driven the music itself to any heights of personal expression. "Chemical material don't you shudder?/ Something awful is happening we don't suspect" is one kick-butt refrain from Takagi Kan's Hip Hip Fork. "We can't control MSG/ Our tongue has become paralyzed." Takagi declares that his song is mainly "about MSG companies trying to make a lot of money in Asia," though there seems little risk that he will get boiled as Ice T did in America over his Cop Killer track...
...freak show on right here! Again!" TWIN PEAKS FIRE WALK WITH ME, Lynch's way-too-late prequel to the 1990 TV series, relates the last days of teen queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). After an agonizing first half-hour designed to empty the theater, Lynch unleashes his patented perfervid style, puts the familiar dwarfs and feebs on display and elicits a nicely horrifying turn from Lee. But the magic has died: nothing seems older than a two-year-old fad on the comeback trail. How ya gonna keep 'em down in Twin Peaks after the Zeitgeist's gone...
...ending works, though, not only as a jolt for the audience but also in resolving the drama on its own perfervid terms. Once Alex, the nightmare shrew, has threatened the dream family, she must be faced down by the family. Once Dan has sinned, only Beth can forgive him, by saving his life. Once Alex has invaded the home, she must be killed by the homemaker; the Wife must destroy the Other Woman...
