Television and radio have created a demand for rockers in the flesh. After three miserable seasons, the concert business is thriving again. The Police, who four years ago played to seven people in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., will perform before 1 million fans this summer in 30 U.S. cities. They sold out New York's Shea Stadium in just five hours for an August concert. Frontier Booking, New Music's hottest agency, will put 20 bands on the road this summer, twice as many as last year. Pryor, the most popular black actor in movie history, was one of Murphy's early comedy heroes; as a fledgling professional comic, Murphy used to perform an entire act using Pryor's material, calling it "A Tribute to Richard Pryor." Both performers have won the multiracial mass movie audiences, and both have swum in the dark blue undercurrents of ethnic humor. Said a Vatican confidant of the Pope: "Some people in Poland expect the Pope to perform a miraculous change in the situation. But the Pope has only one wish-to bring a degree of unity and a measure of hope to a divided nation in which the people see no hope...

A shadowy frieze of girls, tracing small, varied steps, embodies the pattern; two dancers (Maria Caligari, Bart Cook) perform a sinuous pas de deux to the melody. This is a mesmerizing piece. The last segment, to a boisterous excerpt from Glass's opera Akhnaten, is what his fans call "very Jerry": arms up, fingers splayed, keep it moving, get it right the first time. Across, around, up and down the stage sweep cadres...
