AMERICAN CONSERVATORY THEATER, San Francisco, will perform Hamlet, A Streetcar Named Desire, Edward Albee's Tiny Alice, Long Day's Journey into Night by Eugene O'Neill, Tartuffe and The Misanthrope by Molière throughout the summer. Your Own Thing, Donald Driver's rock musical, plays through August...
...highly motorized, it is probably one of the most efficient. The L.A.P.D. has a higher percentage of civilians than any other big-city force (three civilians for every ten in uniform); they handle many tasks, such as clerical work and traffic direction, that elsewhere sworn policemen usually perform, thus freeing all but a few regulars for active law-enforcement duty. An elite team of 225, known as the "Top Group," has been organized for special assignments, such as nabbing organized car-theft rings or stickup artists. A "community radio watch," composed of cabbies and truck drivers who have...
Some time this week, the newest NASA satellite is scheduled to perform a complex series of operations in orbit. If all goes well, Radio Astronomy Explorer-A will unreel a collection of booms and antenna until it turns into a veritable space spider, with two pairs of appendages reaching 1,500 ft. from tip to tip-a distance greater than the height of the Empire State Building (which is 1,472 ft.). With those great legs foraging for information, RAE-A will act as a flying radio telescope capable of monitoring signals that even the largest earth-bound installations cannot...
...hangs in front, with sunflowers traced on it. As Tharon Musser's lighting changes, suggestions of a lion's head appear; and shortly some slinky jazz with a perky clarinet over a tonic-dominant ostinato ushers in the Lion (Ted Graeber) with a lioness (Jane Farnol). The two animals perform a semidance pantomime, until the Lion gets rid of his partner. Shaw's script calls for no lioness, but this seems a quite acceptable bit of directorial padding. When alone, the Lion does some pushups, indulges in a few boxing-ring victory gestures, and comically assumes a Charlie Chaplin cross...
...great love of animals, and is wholly at home in Shaw's amusing baby-talk (such as "Did um get an awful thorn into um's tootsums wootsums?"). The extraction of the thorn from the Lion's paw is nicely handled, after which Androcles and the Lion perform a waltz that starts in the minor and shifts to major as they dance off into the distance and leave the henpecking Megaera behind. I think I am correct in recalling that, for some reason, Megaera's final triple taunt of "Coward!" has been omitted...
