...years ago at the University of Wisconsin Prof. Alexander Meiklejohn, one-time Amherst President, began an "experimental" college. His freshmen were to study only Periclean culture, his sophomores U. S. history, sociology. From the experimental college they were to enter the University's junior class (TIME, June 18. Sept. 10, 1928). This year the first batch of experiments will be thrown in with the general run of undergraduates. President Glenn Frank, Dr. Meiklejohn's great & good friend, who sponsored the experimental college, will soon have proof of his pet pedagogical pudding...
There is nothing startlingly new, of course, in this plan. It is an adaptation of Plato's groups of gold and brass and iron men to the needs of a more heterogeneous society than existed in Periclean Athens. But there is a sensible presentation of the modern problem with sensible emphasis on the need for right feeling among representative men. The ideas are not presented with as much persuasiveness as might be wished. Outstanding is the annoying fault of unnecessary repetition of phrases and explanations, as for example the constant definition of mana and miasma, which in the 538 pages...
...prevalent wail that man, the individual, has fallen from his former high estate to the status of cog in machine. Historian Van Loon raises considerable doubt as to that former altitude, these present depths. And in a sound exposition of business expansion, Julius Klein recalls that an ancient Periclean law gave each Athenian the right to own five slaves, whereas every inhabitant of the U. S. today has at his disposal the power equivalent of 150 slaves. Human happiness lies in using the machine without worshiping it. Brilliantly, Bertrand Russell predicates the only remedy for science as not less...
History. In 1800, the Earl of Elgin set forth to make drawings, models, paintings of the Athenian ruins which testify to the immortality of Periclean Greece and the work of Phidias. Greece then was under Ottoman dominion. Being a Christian, Lord Elgin found himself obstructed at every turn. His artist companions were forbidden approach to the ruins, let alone entrance. Later Great Britain's arms prevailed over France, and Egypt (hitherto under French dominion) was dealt to Turkey. So enthusiastic waxed the Ottomans over this token of good will, that Lord Elgin was told to go ahead and make...
Time has only added to the glory of the man who was recognized in his time as the greatest of the trinity of tragedians that flourished in Periclean Athens: The work of Sophocles finds the mean between the rather conservative religions views of Aeschylus and the radical thought of Euripides Similarly, the Sophoclean style strikes a compromising note equally removed from the grandiose sublimity of his predecessor and from the freer and more popular handling of the theme in the plays of Euripides. At 12 o'clock today, in Sever 26, Professor Gulick will speak of the tragic poet...
