...problem is twofold. First, it's hard to predict the future. Second, it's really hard to predict the future when so many parts of the economy are in flux. "This has been an extraordinarily difficult period for forecasters," says Harvard economist James Stock. "Our models aren't really designed for predicting massive changes." Philip Joyce, a professor of public policy and administration at George Washington University, figures that in normal times, budget projections a couple of years out tend to be pretty reliable, at five years less so and at 10 years not much at all. "But these aren...

...interesting you say that, because on first blush this appears to be a relatively strong period for the NYPD. Crime remains fairly low, and we haven't seen some of the tensions between the department and the public that we saw in the 1990s. This is more style than it is substance. There have been four killings of unarmed black men by police since Kelly has been commissioner, and there's been no reform of police procedure that I'm aware of. ...Italy does not need to look for its glory days in its fascist past. It does not even need to look longingly at the Renaissance and the Roman Empire (though, unlike the fascist period, it would do well to take these moments as inspiration). Italy has always been a country marked by the enormous creativity of its citizens. I truly hope young Italians will embrace this aspect of their history and make it central to the nation’s future...

...really love the '80s or is it all just a sham? I'm rather indifferent to any 10-year period as an arbitrary measure of my own happiness. There were certainly some good moments in the '80s, like when Michael Jackson moonwalked. There were also some not-so-good moments, like when the space shuttle exploded. Coincidentally, they both involved space...
