Like most period musicals, Miss Liberty is charming to look at, with gay costumes and Oliver Smith's elegant and evocative sets. Like most period musicals also, Miss Liberty has a thin, insipid air of farce about it. But it is too much in one key; by not changing enough, it drifts steadily toward the worse. As a complete novice at musicomedy, Mr. Sherwood might have blundered into something truly fresh and individual, but he seems to have carefully studied how to be as much (and as mechanically) like everybody else as possible...

Manhattan's swelling Puerto Rican community has provided a lush bonanza tor nonscheduled U.S. airlines. For two years, many "non-skeds" had packed in their passengers like cattle to make their cut-rate fares profitable. Worse still in the same period there had been no less than four crashes, killing 117 people. ...Great Gatsby (Paramount] might have been a fine picture. F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel had almost everything a moviemaker could ask for: a strong love story, natural dialogue, an emotional climate as supercharged with violence as a summer storm, and a sensitive perception of period and place. Unfortunately, the movie version misses many of its opportunities...
