It makes sense: since Americans spend about $12 billion a year on medical services for their dogs, cats, etc., a little insurance help can be a nice bonus for owners. Generally, the one percent of American employers offering this perk aren't providing pet health insurance per se, but rather a discount plan that cuts the cost of veterinary visits and prescriptions by a set percentage. Three-year-old Pet Assure, Inc., of Dover, N.J., provides one such plan, and according to company spokesperson Jerry Hirsch, demand has never been higher. "This is just another way employers can keep workers happy," Hirsch says.
