Scientists have a better chance than non-scientists to obtain outside funds for their research, and so do not face the same financial or career difficulties of assistant professors in the humanities and social sciences. Within these fields, however, status differences persist. The department of Sociology invites junior faculty to all departmental meetings and asks them to serve on a number of departmental committees; the Committee on History and Literature has separate meetings for the Board of Tutors (including graduate students and junior faculty), and the meetings of the senior faculty affiliated with the concentration. ...Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) of 1976 has closed many of the gaps by formalizing requirements for pensions and guaranteeing a worker the nonforfeitable right to a pension after 10 years of continuous service (vesting rights). Harvard's pension plan, however, exemplifies the many inadequacies in the system that persist, especially for non-hourly unionized workers...
...Teng wound up his historic visit at week's end, it seemed that his mission had not been an unalloyed triumph after all. But under cross-examination by Howe enemy Cosmo Capobianco's lawyers during his March 1977 lawsuit proceedings in Middlesex Country Superior Court, Howe revealed that he did not know the meanings of many of the words used in his own press releases...
...heavy costs Syria had incurred since it intervened in Lebanon two years ago. Ironically, Assad's forces moved in to prevent the defeat of the Christian armies by radical Muslim and Palestinian commandos. Since then, however, the Syrians and the Christians have become bitter enemies because the Christians persist-against Assad's advice-in their efforts to partition Lebanon along sectarian lines. Since February more than 650 Syrian soldiers have perished in running battles with the militiamen, who receive guns and training from Israel. Moreover, the Lebanese fighting has forced Assad to redeploy many of his best troops...
