...there a link? In 2003, a 15-person committee impaneled by the CDC and the National Institutes of Health analyzed the available studies on thimerosal and its possible connections to autism and concluded that there was no scientific evidence to support the link. In a further show of confidence, the committee noted that it did "not consider a significant investment in studies of the theoretical vaccine-autism connection to be useful." Instead, the panel recommended that studies focus on less explored genetic or biological explanations for the disease...
...receive them-such as newborns and cancer patients with suppressed immune systems. These vulnerable folks depend on riding the so-called herd-immunity effect. The higher the immunization rate in any population, the less likely that a pathogen will penetrate the group and find a susceptible person inside. As immunization rates drop, that protection grows thinner. That's what happened in the current measles outbreaks in the western U.S., and that's what happened in Nigeria in 2001, when religious and political leaders convinced parents that polio vaccines were dangerous and their kids should not receive them. The authors carefully worked out the relationships among the subjects, many of whom were related by family, social or professional ties. Then, they layered onto this network the number of cigarettes each person smoked a day, from zero upward...
...idea is that people pay it forward - with health. When one person (we'll call him the index case) quits smoking, his closest contacts, such as friends and family members, become 36% less likely to be smokers too. These folks then influence their social circles, and so forth, until people several degrees removed from the index case also become nonsmokers. In the study, even people who did not mutually identify themselves as friends, but were in the same social network, were affected by each other's behavior: people who labeled themselves as friends of the index case, for example...
...person with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), I am outraged that TIME would regard Bob and Suzanne Wright as heroes. Their group, Autism Speaks, which does not have anyone with an ASD on its board, has joined with Cure Autism Now as part of a campaign to wipe out ASDs. Autistic spectrum disorders are not diseases, and I think I speak for many when I say we are happy the way we are. Autism is a genetic difference in the same vein as skin color, gender and other such factors. Phil Gluyas, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA...
