Digging through old records, Burton finally found immigration papers indicating that Castaneda's origins were really Peruvian. With that clue, our reporter in Peru, Tomás A. Loayza, discovered the first solid biographical facts about Castaneda by locating members of his family, their jewelry shop and former friends in Lima...

Although the President had specifically denied that Connally would "undertake a permanent Government assignment," speculation continued that he was being groomed for Secretary of State or Vice President-without any real evidence. In Latin America, there were warm talks with Argentine President Alejandro Agustin Lanusse and Peruvian dictator Juan Velasco Alvarado, but nothing concrete seemed to come out of the discussions. The inconclusive pattern continued in Australia and New Zealand. One Australian Minister called Connally a "high-powered Averell Harriman, only more impressive." Diplomats in Washington say he has proved to be a shrewd observer and called his mission...

Last week the OAS voted 13 to 7 (with three abstentions) against a Peruvian proposal that each member be permitted to decide independently whether to resume relations with Havana. Along with most OAS members, Washington is opposed to a reconciliation unless and until Castro agrees to behave more "responsibly"-that is, to stop sending subversives into Latin America...

That is more than can be said for Hopper. Ignoring the plot, the director presents a gallery of his favorite art works: Waterfall with a Distant View of Dennis; Effect of Dennis Through Peruvian Haze; Ruins of Dennis by Twilight; and his favorite: Dennis as the Universal Infant. This portrait can be seen throughout The Last Movie, even when other actors come on-notably Stella Garcia as Hopper's Peruvian mistress and Rod Cameron as Rod Cameron. Hopper never appears sober or coherent. This may account for the film's Godardian device-from time to time the legend...
